Exploring Osama bin Laden’s Motivations

By Anthony C Heaford, 13 May 2021

Osama bin Laden did not “hate the West” but he did quite justifiably hate the West’s presence in the Arabian peninsular. Britain’s malign colonial diplomacy in the region from the 1700s onwards warranted that. Back then for example the United Arab Emirates was known as The Pirate Coast (an area that actually stretched from Bahrain to Oman). The Pirate Coast was occupied by various Wahhabi clans who were infamous for their fanatacism and bloodthirstiness as they robbed passing ships in the Persian gulf. Reminding me of the character of modern day Daesh forces, an Arab servant of those pirates professed that:

"their occupation is piracy, and their delight murder; and to make it worse, they give you the most pious reasons for every villainy they commit"
